Identifying a person on a path toward violence, weighing the risk, and managing it toward a safe outcome is what a mature Behavioral Threat Assessment and Management (BTAM) program does. The threat management process, stage by stage
Use these four stages to find where your current practice is strong and where it needs work.
Identify
This is the “see something, say something” most threat assessment programs promote. Someone notices something: a comment, a behavior change, a direct threat. This stage only works if people across your organization know what to watch for and feel safe reporting. Awareness training is what turns bystanders into reporters.
Inquire

Assess
Your team weighs what they have gathered against a structured methodology to judge how serious the risk is and how fast you need to respond. This is the core skill CPPS trains, and it is the line between a hunch and a defensible assessment.
Manage
The team acts. A plan to lower the risk, support for the people involved, monitoring, and adjustment as the situation changes. When a case escalates, a retained CPPS advisor is on call around the clock to review your team’s assessment, judge the potential for violence, and help shape the response, up to expert witness testimony if it reaches litigation.
